Jesus is Condemned to Death

The imagery of this work is typical of the first station in 19th- and 20th-century "stations of the cross" in the United States. With hands bound and wearing the crown of thorns, Jesus is led away while Pilate has his hands washed.
The images in a given set of stations may be paintings, sculptures, or simple wooden plaques. By church regulation there must be a wooden cross at each station, but the cross need not be as prominent as in this example (Catholic Encyclopedia, s.v. "Way of the Cross").
